Liepaja Municipal Police maintains and ensures public order and safety in Liepaja – the 3rd biggest city of Latvia. If you visit Liepaja, you’ll see the Liepaja Municipal Police officers around the city and especially in larger public events as we do care for the safety of Liepaja inhabitants and visitors. At the same time duties of Liepaja Municipal Police include various tasks, i.e. ensuring surveillance and safety in evacuated areas, as well as participation in rescue and evacuation works.

Liepaja Municipal Police is chairing the Union of the Baltic Cities Safe Cities Commission (UBC Safe CC) – you’ll learn more about UBC Safe CC in the following weeks.

Meet Kaspars Vārpiņs – Head of Liepaja Municipal Police Analytics Department

I’ve been working for Liepaja Municipal Police since 2011. In the beginning of the CASCADE project, I was a Public Relations Specialist who worked with projects as well. During the run of the project I’ve become the Head of Analytics Department and I’m still responsible for the projects in Liepaja Municipal Police. So, now I’m involved in various kinds of analytics, which include work with disaster risks.

In the CASCADE project I’m representing Liepaja Municipal Police and UBC Safe CC. I’ve been part of the project from its beginning, when some of the partners were able to develop the idea and involve more partners to finalize the project idea and start implementing it.

Through the project I’ve taken part in almost all activities with various involvement. I enjoyed taking part in development of the training curriculum for the trainers. Unfortunately, we couldn’t try out the training materials yet because of the COVID-19 pandemic but hopefully we can test the curriculum and start the educational process soon.

I think that understanding the seriousness of climate change related disaster risk is very low because people still don’t understand what may come and that climate change already provides new challenges. Hopefully the CASCADE project will prepare professionals for the future risks.
